Student Media's administrative office is housed within in the Student Life & Leadership office at the Student Union. Two faculty members in the Journalism and Public Communications department and an administrative advisor from Student Life & Leadership advise UAA's student media organizations.
KRUA and The Northern Light are independent media resources representing students at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Both organizations receive funding from UAA student fees. Currently, students pay an $11.00 media fee, of which KRUA receives $5.50 and The Northern Light receives $5.50.
KRUA 88.1 FM is an educational station created in order to enhance the student experience at the University of Alaska Anchorage by providing music, news, sports, campus event coverage and professional broadcast experience. KRUA employs 8 students and trains over 50 volunteer deejays each year and partners with the Journalism and Public Communications department to provide training and hands-on experience for JPC and other students. KRUA’s broadcast license is owned by the University Of Alaska Board Of Regents, and is licensed as an educational, non-commercial FM radio station by the Federal Communications Commission.
The Northern Light is an educational news organization providing reporting, layout, photography, administrative, managerial, and marketing experience for student employees, and offers free writing workshops to interested UAA staff, faculty and students each semester. The Northern Light’s staff is comprised of reporters, editors, business representatives, photographers and other student staff members. The Northern Light, funded by both media fees and advertising sales, is distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community, with a total distribution is 5,000 copies weekly during the spring and fall semesters, and 5,000 copies once monthly during the summer semester.
