Student Media

Student-run media highlights news, events, opinions and music through student voices.

The student-run radio station, KRUA 88.1FM The Edge, brings student voices to life on live radio. Broadcasts are available over the airwaves, the online stream and the mobile app, RadioFX.

The Northern Light publishes a paper every Tuesday during the academic year and four special issues: the Freshmen Guide, Campus Kick-Off Edition and the Fall and Spring Commencement Editions. Find everything in the paper and more online and on Facebook.

The Northern Light circulates 2,000 papers every week and reaches thousands of people online with each new issue. KRUA broadcasts to a young, primarily student audience across the South Central region of Alaska, and streams globally online.

Both student organizations offer a variety of options for advertising and sponsorships. Learn more and submit queries on their websites below.

Get Involved

Beyond even the jobs posted frequently on Careers at UA, both KRUA and The Northern Light offer UAA students the opportunity to engage in student media. KRUA trains over 50 volunteer deejays each year and partners with the Journalism and Public Communications department to provide training and hands-on experience for JPC and other students.

The Northern Light publishes contributor's content regularly in sections like "Letter to the Editor" and "Opinion," in addition to contributions submitted to any column.

Media Board

Comprised of students, faculty and staff, the University of Alaska Anchorage Media Board is the governing body that oversees the student media organizations, The Northern Light and KRUA 88.1FM.

The board is an authority established by the Union of Students' constitution to maintain professional standards of achievement in student media and hold accountable the student fee-funded organizations.

The board selects the managers for KRUA 88.1 FM and The Northern Light, approves media policies and budgets, and serves as an advocate for student media at UAA.

Join the Media Board by submitting a USUAA Petition Packet to the Office of Student Life and Leadership in the Student Union Room 218.

Meetings

The UAA Media Board meets at least three times per semester. Media Board meetings are free and open to the public. Minutes are taken and made available on Google Drive.
