Strategies for Usable and Compliant Kitchens and Bathrooms
Any building, or facility can benefit from the application of the Principles of Universal Design. This session explores how and why universal design was incorporated into the design of different buildings and facilities. For instance, Millennium Park is a municipal park, featuring art and architecture, located between Chicago's loop and lakefront. Langston Hughes Elementary School is a Chicago Public School with 20% of the student population having a disability. The elevator retrofit for the Rehabilitation Institution of Chicago needed to accommodate the needs of independent patients, their families, staff and the public. The headquarters for Access Living, Chicago's only Center for Independent Living (CIL), wanted to be a model of universal design and sustainability for a commercial office building.
Each of these projects presented unique challenges. We will discuss how those challenges were identified and addressed. Presented will be how to avoid design conflicts by understanding the design requirements before design begins and how universal design and sustainability can work together. Information will be presented on how to control costs by using conventional products that meet the clients universal design objectives.
