In addition to the University Honors College, several departments at UAA offer departmental Honors programs. Students may complete both University and departmental honors requirements with dual designations upon graduation.

Below is an alphabetic listing of departmental honors offerings and their requirements. 

ANTHROPOLOGY

  1. Be a declared anthropology major
  2. Satisfy all of the requirements for a BA or BS degree in Anthropology
  3. Meet all the requirements for Graduation with Honors as listed in Chapter 7 of the UAA Catalog
  4. Earn a GPA of 3.5 or above in courses specific to the Anthropology major
  5. Complete a senior thesis project (taken as ANTH A499) based on library, laboratory, or field research resulting in a substantial thesis-quality paper defended before the Anthropology faculty

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

  1. Meet the requirements for Graduation with Honors as listed in Chapter 7 of the UAA Catalog
  2. Meet the requirements for a BA/BS degree in Biological Sciences
  3. Earn a GPA of 3.5 or above in the major requirements
  4. During the senior year of their academic program, the student must gain faculty approval for and complete with a grade of B or better a senior thesis research project with enrollment in BIOL A499. Biological Science faculty members must approve the project proposal and final written report

CHEMISTRY

  1. Minimum GPA: 3.5; Minimum Departmental GPA: 3.5
  2. Satisfy all requirements for a BS degree in Chemistry
  3. Required Project: Complete with distinction a written assignment in the style of a chemical journal based on research performed in CHEM 498.
  4. Required Project Grade: N/A
  5. Required Exam: N/A
  6. Other Requirements: Meet the requirements for "Graduation with Honors" as listed in Chapter 7 of the UAA Catalog.

    Notes: Must notify Departmental Honors Committee in writing of intention to graduate with Departmental Honors at the time Application for Graduation is filed.


CIVIL ENGINEERING

  1. Minimum GPA: N/A; Minimum Departmental GPA: 3.3
  2. Required Project: Gain approval for and complete a design/research project, give oral presentation of results and submit a written proposal and report for approval by academic advisor and the chair of civil engineering
  3. Required Project Grade: N/A
  4. Required Exam: Passing score on Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
  5. Other Requirements: Be an active member of a national and on-campus student chapter of a professional engineering society for at least one year

    Notes: Minimum 30+ resident credits; must have 8+ weeks work experience within engineering related positions.


COMPUTER SCIENCE

  1. Minimum GPA: 3.5; Minimum Departmental GPA: 3.5
  2. Required Project: N/A
  3. Required Project Grade: N/A
  4. Required Exam: N/A

    Notes: Must notify the Chair of the Mathematical Sciences Department in writing on or before the date Application for Graduation is filed; complete a minimum of 12 upper division credits required for the major in residence.


ECONOMICS

INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

  2. Meet the requirements for a BA in International Studies
  3. Maintain a GPA of 3.5 or above in courses applicable to the degree requirements
  4. Complete the program capstone course (HIST A390) with an honor grade (A)


JOURNALISM AND PUBLIC COMMUNICATIONS

  1. Meet the requirements for a B.A. degree in Journalism and Public Communications
  2. Maintain a GPA of 3.5 in JPC Courses
  3. Complete JPC A492 JPC Junior Seminar in the final spring term of study with an honor grade (A or B)


JUSTICE (Research Honors)

  1. Minimum GPA: 3.0;  Minimum Departmental GPA: 3.2
  2. Required Project: JUST 400, JUST 401, & JUST 488
  3. Required Project Grade: A or B
  4. Required Exam: N/A
  5. Other Requirements: Meet the requirements for membership in the National Justice Honor Society

    Notes: Must notify Justice Center Program Coordinator in writing of intention to graduate with Justice Research Honors on or before the date Application for Graduation is filed.


LANGUAGES

  1. Meet all the requirements for Graduation with Honors as listed in Chapter 7 of the UAA Catalog
  2. Satisfy all requirements for a BA degree in Languages
  3. Maintain an overall UAA GPA of 3.5 with a 3.85 in the major
  4. Notify their Department Advisor in writing at least two semesters prior to graduation on intent to graduate with Departmental Honors
  5. Receive an honors score (90%) (based upon criteria established by the Department) on a comprehensive examination in the language(s) of focus; the comprehensive examination must be completed at least one semester prior to graduation


MATHEMATICS

  1. Meet the requirements for Graduation with Honors as listed in Chapter 7 of the UAA Catalog
  2. Meet the requirements for a BA/BS degree in Mathematics
  3. Earn grade point average of 3.5 or above in the major requirements
  4. Complete a minimum of 12 upper division credits required for the major in residence


MUSIC

  1. Be a declared music major
  2. Meet all the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts, Music or the Bachelor of Music, Performance or the Bachelor of Music, Emphasis Music Education degree
  3. Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher in all music courses applicable to the degree
  4. Meet the requirements for "Graduation with Honors" listed in Chapter 7 of the UAA Catalog. 
    These include: 
    (a) a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher in all college work attempted at both UAA and at all other accredited institutions attended and for all courses used to fulfill the degree program;
    (b) completion of at least 30 academic credits at this institution
  5. Complete MUS A462 which includes a Senior Recital with a grade of B or above.  Bachelor of Arts majors, who are not reuired to present a Senior Recital as part of their degree program may, upon successful completion of MUS A262 with a grade of A, offer an honors performance for faculty adjudicators selected by the Department Chair and the candidate.
  6. Receive an honors score (based on criteria established by the Department) on a comprehensive oral examination for majors
  7. Submit an Intent to Graduate with Honors form to the Department


NURSING

  1. Minimum GPA: 3.5; Minimum Departmental GPA: 3.5
  2. Required Project: Satisfactorily completing the Honors electives NS 440 and NS 441.
  3. Required Project Grade: N/A
  4. Required Exam: N/A
  5. Other Requirements: Meet the requirements for "Graduation with Honors" as listed in chapter 7 of the UAA Catalog

    Notes: Obtain written support for the intent to graduate with honors from advisor; prior to enrolling in first semester senior year classes, notify program and curriculum committee chairs in writing of intent to graduate with honors; and obtain approval to enroll in Honors electives.


PHILOSOPHY

  1. Meet the requirements for a BA degree in Philosophy
  2. Meet the requirements for graduating with honors as listed in Chapter 7 of the UAA Catalog
  3. Maintain a GPA of 3.75 or above in courses specific to the Philosophy Major
  4. Complete the Senior Research Project, PHIL A498, with an honor grade (A) and a recommendation for Departmental Honors from the student's faculty committee for this course
  5. Notify the Chair in writing of intention to graduate with Departmental Honors on or before date Application for Graduation is filed


POLITICAL SCIENCE

  1. Meet the requirements for a BA Degree in Political Science
  2. Maintain a GPA fo 3.5 of above in courses applicable to the degree requirements
  3. Complete PS A492 Senior Seminar in Politics in the final spring term of study with an honor grade (A or B)
  4. Receive an honors score (based upon criteria established by the Department) on a comprehensive examination for the majors


PSYCHOLOGY

  1. Satisfy all requirements for a BA or BS degree in Psychology
  2. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5
  3. Take PSY A412 Foundation of Modern Psychology
  4. Take PSY A420 Conducting Research in Psychology
  5. Complete PSY A499 Senior Thesis.  The thesis project must be approved in advance by the Undergraduate Studies Committee and carried out by following applicable departmental guidelines
  6. Students intending to graduate with Departmental Honors must notify the Departmental Honors Committee in writing on or before the date they file their Application for Graduation with the Enrollment Services Office


SOCIAL WORK

  1. Minimum GPA: N/A   Minimum Departmental GPA: 3.50 or higher in upper division Social Work courses
  2. Required Project: SWK 463
  3. Required Project Grade: A
  4. Required Exam: N/A
  5. Other Requirements: Grade of A in SWK 363, SWK 430 SWK 431, SWK 461B, SWK 462B; grade of B or higher in HNRS 310 or SWK 243; completion of one course in human biology, human development over the life span and applied statistics with grade of C or higher

    Notes: Minimum of 30+ resident credits; notify Program Coordinator of intention to graduate with departmental honors on or before date Application for Graduation is filed.


SOCIOLOGY
