OLAW FAQ

New Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) are now posted on the OLAW (Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare) website.  OLAW developed the new FAQs in response to requests for guidance on these topics.

Field Research Guidelines

These are the primary guidelines for conducting field research and are important documents given the research focus at UAA.

Use of Controlled Substances

If so, you must comply with University Controlled Substance Policy.

To continue using controlled substances in your research program each of you MUST apply for a DEA Research Registration: DEA Form 225 - electronic forms are here: http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drugreg/reg_apps/index.html

The form is easy to fill out and the $70 annual fee can be waived for a public institution. Fill out the forms and we can get Kim Peterson to sign the waiver section. You need to put in the code for the exact drugs you are using. Codes are HERE. You will also need to compile a list of individuals working under you who will have access to controlled substances in your possession (name, job title, contact number, birthdate). I advise you to keep this list very short!

Foreign Animal Diseases

Check out the online book Foreign Animal Diseases "The Gray Book", by the Committee on Foreign Animal Diseases of the United States Animal Health Association.

Guidelines for Transporting Research Animals

The National Academies Press issued "Guidelines for Humane Transportation of Research Animals" prepared by the National Research Council.  This document can be viewed here.
