2010 Alaska Civil Rights Month to host 'Our Stories' panel

Today's "Our Stories" panel will include Courtney Brooke Smith, marketing manager at Mat-Su College, Ashleigh Gaines, UAA student, and Eva Brown, community elder.

UAA's 2010 Alaska Civil Rights Month has highlighted and honored achievements of civil rights leaders from Jan. 14 through Feb. 25.

The kick-off event was a birthday cake celebration at 10 UAA Anchorage locations, Mat-Su College and Kenai Peninsula College to pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Some of the other highlighted events open to the public and to the UAA campus community included:

  • MLK Annual Holiday Commemoration in the Performing Arts Center, Jan. 17
  • Student Activities presents Nikki Giovanni, African American author, Jan. 21
  • Rev. Dr. Samuel Billy Kyles, the last remaining person to have spent those final hours with Dr. King, Feb. 3
  • "Our Stories" panel discussions with Black/African-Americans, UAA faculty, staff, students and alumni, Feb. 9 and 23
  • Faculty Senate Diversity Committee will feature four faculty brown bag presentations
  • "For the Rights of All: Ending Jim Crow in Alaska" film, followed by a panel discussion, Feb. 16
