Biological Sciences Seminar Series: Kathy Kelsey, 'Climate and Management Controls on Forest Growth and Forest Carbon Balance in the Western United States,' Sept. 25

by Michelle Saport  |

Friday, Sept. 25, 3:30-4:30 p.m. ConocoPhillips Integrated Science Building, Room 120

Kathy Kelsey, Ph.D., postdoctoral fellow in biological sciences at UAA, will present " Climate and Management Controls on Forest Growth and Forest Carbon Balance in the Western United States."

Seminar abstract: Climate change is resulting in a number of rapid changes in terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. These changes are particularly important in forests, which comprise a critical component of the global carbon cycle and therefore have the potential to contribute to feedbacks within the global carbon cycle and affect future trajectories of climate change. Here, Kelsey will present her work evaluating climate-driven changes in forest growth and carbon balance in Southwest Colorado. This work informs our understanding of forest response to human influences and ongoing climate change. Kelsey will finish with a look forward to ongoing research investigating the effects of climate change and another important force affecting ecosystems, grazing of migratory herbivores, on carbon and other biogeochemical cycles in Western Alaska.

About the seminar series: UAA hosts an active program for biological sciences seminars. All seminars are held in the ConocoPhillips Integrated Sciences Building on Fridays at 3:30 p.m. in Room 120 of the ConocoPhillips Integrated Science Building, unless noted otherwise. Our seminar series is free and open to the public. Parking is complimentary on UAA's campus on Fridays. Please call (907) 786-1298 for directions or look up 3101 Science Circle, Anchorage, AK 99508 for map directions.
