Alaska Leaders Archive

The Alaska Leaders Archive will preserve the legacy of those who have served Alaska and its people. The archive will showcase historical collections and promote civic education, allowing Alaskans a unique opportunity to engage with the history that created the state we know today.

Mission and Vision

As the leading center for public service education in Alaska, the archive will train Alaska’s future leaders about the legacy of Alaska’s historic leaders through hands-on learning. Multidisciplinary programs in public policy and leadership will inform policymakers, scholars and students. The archive will advance public civic engagement through seminars, conferences and community events. It will feature interactive exhibits allowing Alaskans to see, hear and experience the history of our state. 

Ted Stevens Collections

Gifted to UAA in 2023, the Ted Stevens Collection is truly an Alaska-sized archive that will be proudly housed on the Anchorage campus. It contains over 4,000 boxes of the senator’s memorabilia, with 8 million pages of records and thousands of photos and audio-visual pieces representing his more than 40 years of public service to Alaska. The collection spans a half-century of Alaska history and encompasses Sen. Stevens’ career in the military, executive branch and 40 years as Alaska’s U.S. senator. The collection ranges from the early day of statehood to contemporary issues. It features Stevens’ work on landmark legislation regarding Native land claims, sustainable fisheries, telecommunications, education, energy, aviation, public health, national security and the Arctic. It is one of the largest documented congressional collections in history.

Support the Alaska Leaders Archive

Now is the time to celebrate and engage the legacy of past leaders with an eye toward the future. Establishing the Alaska Leaders Archive is no small task. UAA and the Ted Stevens Foundation are beginning a campaign to establish the ALA. Renovations to the UAA/APU Consortium Library will create a modern archive and interactive exhibits to preserve and present the archival papers of Sen. Stevens, as well as records of Alaska Native leaders, elected officials as well as business and community leaders. This will build on the more than 130 Alaska leaders currently represented in the library’s collections.
