Oahu is home to a range of rare species, including a quartet of endangered birds like the Ae‘o, or Hawaiian stilt (pictured). These birds and plenty more rely on the island’s wetlands for foraging, roosting and breeding. But invasive species threaten Oahu’s delicate ecosystem, reducing available habitat and drying out much-needed marshes. AERC staff on Oahu are restoring the Pu‘ewai Wetlands by removing invasive species and replacing them with Hawaiian plants that evolved with the island’s ecosystem. Consistent upkeep is required to keep invasives in check and ensure Oahu’s endangered birds can continue roosting in the best habitat available.
