AERC supports student researchers nationwide through Scientific Leadership Awards (SLA), providing funding and mentorship for the next generation of scientists and policy leaders. The SLA program is sponsored by the US Department of Homeland Security and specifically benefits Minority-Serving Institutions like UAA, providing career opportunities for underrepresented students across the country.

These SLA opportunities are organized by AERC, but available to undergraduate and graduate students at any American institution. Selected SLA fellows work with faculty mentors at their home institutions to research topics as broad as oil spill modeling, plant phenology, cybersecurity infrastructure, and maritime engineering. AERC has offered fellowships to students from community colleges, universities, and graduate programs everywhere from New Hampshire to Texas to UAA.
