This year’s Fall Grand Rounds, organized by UAA’s Interprofessional Education Committee (IPE) and the Alaska Center for Rural Health & Health Workforce (ACRH-HW), focused on the topic of Traditional Healing by request from rural communities. This annual event is intended to bring health professionals and students from different disciplines or areas of study together for educational and collaborative conversations. There was an abundance of attendees, including students, staff and faculty, both virtually and in-person, bringing the total to 122 participants! This year there were four panelists: Anna Ashenfelter, who shared her story as a patient; Meda DeWitt, a traditional healer with The Wilderness Society; Chandra Preator, a Physical Therapist at Norton Sound Health Corporation; and Eric Ortman, a Chiropractor at Arctic Chiropractic Nome. After the panelists completed their presentations, participants joined smaller groups with staff or faculty serving as facilitators to discuss what they had just learned. Finally, the groups reconvened to share their key takeaways. Gloria Burnett, Director of ACRH-HW, served as this year’s MC and reflects on the importance of this event, “it is always refreshing to create educational opportunities to foster an appreciation for Alaska Native traditional practice which is very rarely highlighted academia.” A big thanks to everyone who attended Fall Grand Rounds, looking forward to next year!
