University of Alaska Interim President Pat Pitney delivered the annual State of the University address Wednesday, Feb. 24 during which she highlighted success stories across the UA system and the many ways the university benefits the economic needs of the state.

Educators Rising Alaska conference scheduled for Feb. 28–March 1

Educators Rising Alaska will host its annual conference virtually Feb. 28-March 1. The theme for this year’s EdRisingAK is “Rising Above Adversity.” EdRisingAK seeks to support middle school through collegiate students as they become Alaska educators.

UA Board of Regents to decide on UAA athletic programs and hear from Gov. Mike Dunleavy during Feb. 25-26 meeting

Meeting of the full board to discuss issues including UAA athletics, the Alaska College of Education, board goals and measures, and to hear committee reports and updates from UA Interim President Pat Pitney, university chancellors, and governance groups. Regents also will be given an in-depth look at the College of Health through a “Did You Know” video and presentation on the overall success of health programs.

UAA Music faculty presents an online concert for University of Memphis Classical Guitar Society

UAA music faculty member Dr. Armin Abdihodzic presents an online concert sponsored by the University of Memphis Classical Guitar Society. The concert was prerecorded in the UAA Recital Hall at the beginning of February and premiered on YouTube on Feb. 13. This concert includes 20th century works written for classical guitar which Dr. Abdihodzic recorded last Summer on his fourth CD.

Yearlong program seeks to prevent Type-2 diabetes

A 12-month diabetes prevention program offered by Zoom begins in March. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed the program, which is offered by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service. It is geared to individuals who are at risk of developing Type-2 diabetes. According to the CDC, one in three Americans has prediabetes, and excess weight is a key risk factor.

Bartlett Lecture Series — Call for Recommendations

The Bartlett Lecture Series Committee is requesting recommendations for a speaker for the 2022 lecture. Please recommend a lecturer whose work involves the promotion of individual freedom and the public good. The deadline for recommendations is March 5 at 5 p.m. The Bartlett Lecture Series Committee will review recommendations on March 12 and select a candidate from the suggested lecturers.

Staff Make Students Count nominations open

Celebrating Black History Month: Events for Feb. 17–26

The YouAA Committee has planned or coordinated a wide variety of events in celebration of Black History Month. All events are open to the entire UAA community. Students, staff and faculty are also welcome to join the YouAA Committee if they are interested in cultivating a campus community in which everyone belongs.
