With a career in civil engineering stretching back to the Good Friday Earthquake, Ted has had a hand in the immense expansion of Anchorage over the past 50 years. When he first moved to town, there were only two paved roads in the entire city.

Monday was the first official day of autumn, and here in Anchorage and at UAA the fall colors are certainly out in full force. UAA photographer Philip Hall took a walkabout around campus this week to snap some photos of our beautiful campus in all its green and gold glory.

Most Alaskans wouldn’t link the word opera with Unalakleet, a community of 700 located just at the mouth of its namesake river on Norton Sound. Maybe not, until now. UAA vocal performance student and coloratura soprano Kira Eckenweiler grew up in Unalakleet.

Cristy Hickel, this year’s Alumni Humanitarian Award recipient, has coached hundreds of Anchorage kids over the past 30 years, and many of them have come to feel like family. She says, “It’s always so much more than Xs and Os.” Cristy will be recognized at the Green & Gold Gala on Sept. 27.

UAA recently concluded an 11-day stretch of festivities to celebrate the grand opening of the Alaska Airlines Center. Enjoy a slideshow of the second week of events, highlighting the Taste of Alaska, Drive-In Movie and Food Truck Rodeo, Alabama Shakes and Howlapalooza.

This management and marketing double major is also developing expertise in helping students feel like they belong here at UAA. As student manager of the Daily Den, he welcomes students to "the living room of campus" for snacks and a chat between classes, Monday-Thursday.

Greeks at UAA aren't like the raucous frat boys and sorority girls made infamous in headlines or movies like "Animal House." Here, they're more likely to see Greek life as a way to grow friendships and gain a richer campus experience.

Virginia, among this year's Alumni of Distinction, co-founded the UAA College of Engineering Alumni chapter last year and now oversees the group’s ambitious goals as president. She'll be recognized at the Green & Gold Gala on Saturday, Sept. 27.
