April has been nationally recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month for over 21 years. Gov. Dunleavy released a proclamation for this month, reflecting the priority for awareness in Alaska. His proclamation can be found at: Sexual Assault Awareness Month Alaska Proclamation.

Congratulations to Faculty Development COW Award winners!

UAA’s Faculty Development and Instructional Support unit (a merger of CAFE, CCEL and AI&e) is pleased to announce the recipients of our 2021-2022 Faculty Development Awards. The success of UAA’s faculty development initiatives and programs is a direct result of the willingness of faculty and staff who share their time and expertise with their colleagues.

Econ Club Guest Speaker: Katie Berry from McKinley Research Group

Economist Katie Berry joined McDowell Group in March 2017. Katie holds Master’s degrees in Economics and Finance from the University of Wyoming. As a Teacher’s Assistant for the Economics and Finance Department, she led discussions for the Financial Markets & Institutions class and supported instruction of the Behavioral Finance and Banking Management & Policy classes.

Alumni of Distinction: Amanda Metivier

Amanda Metivier

Social work alumna and 2021 Alumni Humanitarian Amanda Metivier is the director of the Child Welfare Academy and co-founder of Facing Foster Care in Alaska. Through her advocacy at both organizations, she has led efforts to expand services and support for foster youth across Alaska.

Kira Apaachuaq Eckenweiler

Music performance alumna and 2021 Alumni Emerging Leader Kira Apaachuaq Eckenweiler serves as the mayor of Unalakleet. Her roles in civil service and music are rooted in a desire to support her community. She most recently secured $30 million in funding to fix the water system for her city.

Open forums with Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs finalists

The search committee for the vice chancellor for student affairs position is happy to announce that four finalists are coming to campus to meet with UAA stakeholders the week of April 11. The search committee invites all members of the UAA community to open forums with each finalist. The open forum will include a presentation by the finalist and a time for questions from the audience.

Join Alaska State Refugee Coordinator Issa Spatrisano for a presentation on how the U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program operates, an overview of the Lautenberg Amendment and services here in Alaska. Spatrisano will also discuss Ukrainian refugee resettlement in the U.S.
