2020 Democracy & Civic Action Week runs Sept. 14-19

Since 2018, UAA's Democracy & Civic Action Week has invited students, faculty, staff and community members to explore diverse perspectives about the role of democracy and civic engagement in the United States. This year's theme is Designing a Future for Democracy. Through a range of activities provided by departments, programs and organizations from across campus, presenters and participants are encouraged to learn from the past, to explore the issues of today and to imagine who we could be as a democratic society.

Sept. 18, 2020: Assessment Seminar/Core Competency Kick Off: Equity Through Transparency in Learning and Teaching

Join Dr. Suzanne Tapp for a hands-on workshop in which you will learn how to TILT a curricular or co-curricular assignment or activity toward greater transparency. Participants should bring an assignment or activity to work on, with a preference for one that aligns with the Core Competency Personal, Professional, and Community Responsibility.

Sept. 18, 2020: Securing Democracy: Addressing cybersecurity concerns around our election

For perhaps the first time, many Americans are genuinely worried about the integrity of our upcoming election. The impact of COVID-19, concerns over gerrymandering, evidence of foreign governments spreading disinformation, changes to voting systems, accusations of voter suppression, and more are creating mistrust about the election process itself. Please join us for an important interactive discussion about cybersecurity and steps you can take to help secure our democratic elections!

Chancellor update on shared services decision

Thank you for your feedback on the proposal to create a shared services unit for fiscal management at UAA’s Anchorage campus. I am writing to inform you I have decided to move forward with the implementation of a single, campuswide shared services unit. This decision is consistent with the recommendation of UAA’s Shared Services Task Force and includes university-level human resources, purchasing, and finance and accounting-related activities.

UAA earned high marks for its undergraduate business, engineering and computer science programs in the 2021 Best Colleges rankings, released by U.S. News and World Report this week.

During their first in-person lab of the semester, UAA Medical Assisting Program students learned how to sterilize medical equipment. While most courses have shifted to alternate delivery this fall, in-person labs are still being offered for some fields in which hands-on learning is considered critical.
