A visit in January with Apollo 13 commander, James Lovell, was engineering student Forest Rose Walker’s second opportunity to meet an astronaut. And it was her third brush with NASA, courtesy of the Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program.

William is often the first point of contact at Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson (JBER) for active duty military students and their dependents trying to navigate their way through college. He's also a student with two alumni and a fellow student in his immediate Green-and-Gold family.

As a young woman, Jeane T'áaw xíwaa Breinig didn't have time for a college degree, much less a doctorate, but she cautiously waded into academia and found a terrific reason to stay.

This Yu'pik-Caucasian went from an interest in anthropology to an eventual career in nursing, and credits UAA's Recruitment and Retention of Alaska Natives into Nursing (RRANN) program for helping her find her way. She now works as a pediatrics nurse at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage.

Her hometown is a coastal area of Western Alaska near Nome, where she returns from school to hunt, fish and enjoy friends and family. Her home away from home, however, is the stage of an opera. Meet UAA music performance student Kira Eckenweiler.
