BOR extends Pitney’s presidential term, discusses racial equity initiative and votes to reinstate UAA Alpine skiing

At its meeting today, the University of Alaska Board of Regents extended the term of UA Interim President Pat Pitney to ensure stability in leadership while the university continues to navigate budget stability and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The search for the next president is anticipated to begin in spring 2022.

Jean Brockel estate donates $1.65 million to KPC; Brockel family donated $2.59 million over the years

KPC has received the largest donation in its history from the Jean Brockel estate. Jean Brockel was the widow of Clayton Brockel, founder of the college in 1964. The $1.6-plus million donation comes from the estate left by Jean. Clayton died in July 2013 and their son, John passed away in January 2008.

Marsha Olson joins Center for Community Engagement & Learning as Associate Director

The Center for Community Engagement & Learning is pleased to welcome Marsha Olson (Assistant Professor, University Studies), in the role of Associate Director. Olson has served UAA for 11 years, teaching courses in Communication and University Studies. She has been involved with the Center for Community Engagement and Learning for the last five years. She has implemented community-engaged projects in her courses, led and developed events and programming for the Center, been involved in the Center's Advisory Council work, and served as a Faculty Fellow in connection with CCEL's annual Democracy and Civic Action Week.

Call for Meritorious Service Award nominations

The Meritorious Service Awards Committee is reaching out to the community for suggested nominees. The criteria as outlined in the Board of Regents’ Policy (Part X – Academic Policy - Chapter 10.03.030), is evidence of significant public, academic, volunteer or philanthropic service to UAA or one of its community campuses, or to an Alaskan community.

As the spring semester approaches, it is the time to place textbooks and other course materials on reserve for your students at the UAA/APU Consortium Library. Due to ever-rising education costs, the consideration of textbook affordability is an opportunity for us to support our students and course reserves is one way to enhance student success.

CBPP Dean’s Office awards 2021 Scholarships

The Dean’s Office has awarded twenty-three students with scholarships to continue their studies in the College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP). Recipients are selected by CBPP’s Scholarship Committee on the basis of merit, talent, or leadership/community involvement.

"Watching, listening to and reading about the violent events that occurred in Washington, D.C. yesterday is upsetting and unsettling," wrote Interim Chancellor Bruce Schultz in a message to the UAA community. "The disregard for order in our sacred democracy and the violence that ensued as armed rioters interrupted Congress in their attempts to certify the results of the U.S. presidency is a harrowing moment in our country's history."

Welcome to the spring 2021 semester. I sincerely hope you enjoyed the extended holiday break and feel ready to seize all the opportunities the new semester and new calendar year provide. I am grateful to serve as UAA’s interim chancellor and want to take this early opportunity to share a few updates.

UAA General Support Services complimentary calendar goes digital for 2021

UAA General Support Services has for many years provided a complimentary wall calendar for staff and faculty, noting holidays and paydays. With so many employees working from home at this time, the logistics of distributing a printed calendar proved overwhelming so we required a different approach this year! GSS will still be providing a complimentary calendar, but in digital format. Multiple options are being created, including a printable version.
