A message from Chancellor Sandeen

In a message to the UAA community, Chancellor Sandeen wrote, "A few minutes ago the Trustees of the California State University System appointed me the next president of California State University, East Bay. While I am sad to leave this wonderful university and my friends and colleagues, I am excited to take on a new challenge at another public, open-access, urban-metropolitan university very similar to the University of Alaska Anchorage — one that is just miles from where I grew up and close to my family."

The latest edition of The Parking Spot includes a message from the director of Parking Services, updates on snow removal and information about parking on campus during winter.

Sociologist's research cited in school board testimony

Richard Emanuel, a member of the Alaska Black Caucus – Allies for Change, cited Dr. Chad Farrell’s research in a successful bid to rename East Anchorage High School in honor of the late Senator Bettye Davis, the first black woman elected to the Alaska House of Representatives and Alaska State Senate. Dr. Farrell’s demographic research revealed that many Anchorage public schools are among the most racially and ethnically diverse in the nation, with East ranking highest in diversity among high schools nationally. In his testimony, Mr. Emanuel stated that “adding Bettye’s name to East highlights the school’s remarkable status, draws attention to one of East’s fundamental qualities, it celebrates diversity.” The Anchorage School Board voted unanimously to rename East as "Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School."

College During COVID: How will snowfall impact my access to campus this year?

UA Foundation names Dr. Tod A. Burnett as president

The University of Alaska Foundation Board of Directors has named Dr. Tod A. Burnett as president of the University of Alaska Foundation and chief development officer of the University of Alaska. Dr. Burnett, was previously the executive vice chancellor for advancement at Brandman University, Irvine, CA, has extensive experience in higher education philanthropy and non-profit leadership. Dr. Burnett succeeds Susan Foley who retired in August and will begin his presidency on November 8, 2020.

UAA Psychological Services Center providing telehealth COVID-19 coping sessions

In addition to its usual counseling services for adolescents and adults, the UAA Psychological Services Center (PSC) is offering free telehealth COVID-19 Coping Sessions for people struggling with sadness, loneliness, anxiety, trouble sleeping, lack of motivation, or other behavioral health concerns while dealing with these trying times. The COVID-19 Coping Session is a free single, one-hour session with a mental health clinician that will be conducted via Zoom or phone. Call 786-1795 to schedule your COVID-19 Coping Session.

Update on campus alignment

The Change and Leadership Group on Academic Alignment had an initial meeting with Chancellor Sandeen to review the group’s charge and introductory materials and ask questions. The group requested the addition of several members and the chancellor agreed.

Celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day

Oct. 12 is Indigenous Peoples Day, an opportunity to celebrate Alaska Native people and communities. UAA recognizes and values the diversity of our unique location in Southcentral Alaska, the ancestral homelands of the Dena’ina, Ahtna Dene, Alutiiq/Sugpiaq, Chugachmiut and Eyak peoples.
