UAA Fall 2020 semester COVID-19 update

With the start of the fall semester upon us, the UAA Incident Management Team (IMT) wishes to reiterate the processes and procedures in place to safeguard the well-being of our community from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As you are likely aware, we have implemented a number of measures and support resources to help prevent the transmission of the virus and comply with guidance, recommendations and mandates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our state and local governments.

What the Consortium Library can do for students

The UAA/APU Consortium Library is open to students with a valid UA ID. If you don’t have a UAA ID, we can make one for you. We have laptops along with earbuds available for use within the building for attending classes, and we have laptops that can be checked out to take home. College During COVID: What are the best practices for serving students while working remotely?

Checking emails may not be enough. As students are trying to get overrides or find out which classes they need to take, they are frequently reporting difficulty with reaching departments and individuals on campus who are now working remotely. Please take a few minutes to follow these best practices to ensure students have access to the resources and individuals they need to succeed this semester.

Chancellor Sandeen announces reconfiguration of UAA Athletics

As you know, significant reductions in state funding have dramatically shifted the university’s budget situation. UAA’s funding from the state of Alaska has been reduced by $34 million since fiscal year 2014. UAA leadership has had to make difficult decisions about which programs and services the university can sustain long term.

Change to parking — no permits needed this year

Due to the greatly reduced number of students and employees on campus this academic year, parking permits will not be required to park in surface lots or parking garages. For students living on campus, a free permit to park in housing lots will be required and is available from University Housing. If you have already purchased a parking permit for the fall semester, Parking Services will automatically issue you a refund.

Seawolf Shuttle paused for 2020-21 academic year

Because the majority of classes this fall will take place via alternate delivery with limited face-to-face courses and plans for the spring ’21 semester remain under review, all Seawolf Shuttle services will be paused for the 2020-21 academic year.

Textbooks at the Library

Now is the time to place textbooks and other course materials on reserve for your students at the UAA/APU Consortium Library. With education costs on the rise, considering textbook affordability is an opportunity for us to support our students and course reserves is one way to enhance student success.

Native Student Services welcomes new student services coordinator

Native Student Services staff would like to welcome and congratulate Paula Jones as the new Student Services Coordinator as of August 3, 2020. Paula comes from the Alaskan village of Kuinerraq (Quinhagak). Paula has a strong relationship with her home community, where most of her family still resides.

IT Services Notifications

UAA IT Services (ITS) is working to improve our communication of pending upgrades, planned and unplanned outages. We have a new tool to keep you up-to-date on services and any disruptions that may occur. You can view the status of all our services by going to: status.uaa.alaska.edu.

Senior Vice Provost Renee Carter-Chapman retires from UAA

Senior Vice Provost Renee Carter-Chapman retired from UAA following more than four decades of service. Her ability to listen and gather talented, dedicated individuals together to reach consensus on how to solve problems and support efforts to achieve goals has served UAA and its home communities well.
