New UA HR Talent Acquisition Specialist focused on UAA

UA HR would like to formally introduce Chris Triplett as the Talent Acquisition Specialist focused on UAA recruitment. She will be taking over most of the duties that Rhonda McKay had been handling over the last few months. She will maintain an office in the University Lake Building with the rest of the Anchorage-based UA HR personnel.

Employee guidance for international student F-1 visas

Ordinarily, international students on an F-1 visa may take only one online course each semester. Due to COVID-19, the Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) instituted a temporary exemption regarding this requirement for the spring and summer 2020 semesters. For the fall 2020 semester, SEVP intends to modify these temporary exemptions.

UA Board of Regents announces a series of meetings to select interim president

The University of Alaska Board of Regents will meet later this week and next week to finalize the selection of an interim president for the University of Alaska System. The board expects that an interim president will be appointed on or about July 15 and will serve in the interim role for up to 18 months.

UAA community loses Dr. Garth N. Jones

Dr. Garth N. Jones died on July 1, 2020, from a stroke at the age of ninety-five. Dr. Jones was the founding dean of the College of Business and Public Policy (1974-1979). He joined the University of Alaska Anchorage in the fall of 1973 as a professor of public administration and political science.

UAA Testing Center is relocating

The UAA Testing Center is closed for relocation from the University Center to the UAA/APU Consortium Library, July 1 through July 31, 2020. We will reopen to the public in August and will post the dates on our website.

Sinkhole caused by collapsing culvert under Northern Lights Boulevard

Beginning in Jult 5, 2020, both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Northern Lights Boulevard will be closed to traffic near UAA Drive. Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) work crews will be replacing a creek culvert that collapsed under the road. The road will be fully closed so that the creek can be diverted during construction.

Face covering policy update

As many of you are likely aware, Mayor Berkowitz recently signed Emergency Order EO-13 requiring masks or cloth face coverings be worn indoors in public settings or communal spaces outside the home. Since we have committed to remaining in Phase B and limiting on-campus activities through the fall semester, the implications of this emergency order are minimal for UAA. However, we will adhere to the order and have updated our policy guidance where necessary.

I am pleased to announce that Shawnalee Whitney will be stepping into the role of associate vice provost, Wednesday, July 1. Whitney has served as director of UAA’s Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence (CAFE) since 2014. She has been recognized with the Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2014), a Legislative Citation for contributions to Alaska higher education (2017) and a certificate of recognition from the Diversity Action Council (2019). Throughout her tenure at UAA, she has focused on supporting faculty to become more effective and confident professionals in higher education.
