Extinction in Complex Systems

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Dr. Wackerbauer will speak about Extinction in complex systems on April 6 in ADMIN 143. According to Dr. Wackerbauer, in certain physical, chemical, biological and ecological dynamic systems, spatially and temporally irregular behavior can suddenly collapse to a very regular pattern. This chaotic behavior is like a turbulent patter suddenly disappearing, or an ecological species suddenly becoming extinct. Usually an external perturbation causes such a drastic spontaneous change in a system. This talk highlights some recent findings in various complex systems that can evolve y themselves into a critical state from which extinction follows. This event and parking is free and open to the public.
