American Russian Center hosts European students

The American Russian Center at UAA is leading the second implementation of the Summer Institute for European Leaders in Education from July 23 to Aug. 23. The program provides young students of education from immigrant families living in Europe with the opportunity to learn about the U.S., to become familiar with American pedagogical philosophy, and to learn about teaching techniques for the diverse classroom.
This program was created by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State. There will be only one taking place in the US. This singles out UAA as the top applicant nationwide.

Fulbright Commissions in France, Denmark, Spain and Germany selected 10 participants, age 20 to 27. The participants are all highly motivated students demonstrating leadership through academic work, community involvement and extracurricular activities.

The academic program is led by Abbie Wolfe of the UAA College of Education, and includes volunteer contributions by professionals and academics from many UAA colleges as well as the Anchorage School District. They will live on the UAA campus for the first two weeks and then with host families. While in Anchorage, participants will also complete several hours per week of community service at several non-profit organizations in Anchorage. In addition, they will prepare presentations for a public information evening on The New Face of Europe, which will take place on Aug. 20.
