Message from the Chancellor

by Kathleen McCoy  |

To the UAA Community,

On behalf of the University of Alaska Anchorage Administration, I extend a heartfelt apology to Martin Nanouk, a UAA student, for including his name in a University Relations information release to the campus community in association with a recent alleged false report citation. Including his name may have caused unnecessary damage to Martin Nanouk's reputation and we are sincerely sorry for that. This incident has prompted a change in practice in the issuance of campus communications that include student names to try to prevent this from happening again.

The University remains supportive of Martin and stands ready with a variety of resources to assist his success here as a student. I
respectfully request that the UAA campus disregard recent publicity about the citation.

UAA's practice will be changed as follows: Student names will not be included in University Relations information releases to the campus community without the student's permission regarding police investigations or charges, unless it relates to a felony charge, or in cases where there is a danger and a need to warn the community.

Sincerely,
Chancellor Fran Ulmer
