Honors College notes observation of Veterans Day on Monday

The Forty-Ninth State Fellows Program of the UAA Honors College is calling the UAA community's attention to the commemoration of Veterans' Day, observed this year on Monday, Nov. 12. Veterans' Day acknowledges the service of living veterans, as distinct from Memorial Day, the late-May holiday that honors veterans of all U.S. wars. Veterans' Day began as Armistice Day, a commemoration of the cessation of fighting in World War I (originally called the Great War) at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, 1918. It is still celebrated as Armistice Day in most European countries. In Britain, people wear poppies on their lapels for remembrance. More information is available from History Prof. Steve Haycox, 786-1776.
