UAA Biology presents a seminar this afternoon from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Social Sciences Building (SSB) Room 118. The biology seminar series is free and open to the public. Parking is complementary on UAA's campus on Fridays.

Today's seminar: "Playing in the Mud: Cumacea of the Comau Fjord, Chile"

Cumaceans are small marine crustaceans, common in benthic environments and frequently encountered in benthic sampling programs, fish and bird stomachs, and shallow water night plankton samples. The density and diversity of cumaceans tends to increase with depth and decreasing sediment grain size, although cumaceans can also be abundant in shallow sandy sediments. As part of a larger project on the cumacean family Lampropidae, the Cumacea of the Comau Fjord, Chile were sampled with a benthic sled. At least 10 species were collected, nine of them new to science.
