Student research assistants needed this summer in the Kuskokwim area

by Kathleen McCoy  |

The Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) at UAA is recruiting students to work on a National Science Foundation-funded project studying salmon harvests in their home communities. The study compares how Alaska Kuskokwim and Russian Chukchi communities adapt to changes in the availability of subsistence salmon resources.

ISER seeks undergraduate or graduate students who plan to return to the following Kuskokwim-area communities over the summer: Chevak, Kalskag, Lower Kalskag, Nunapitchuk, Tuluksak, Tuntutuliak and other rural Alaska communities. Candidates must have strong writing skills, intermediate computer skills and the ability to work independently with limited supervision.

Students with an interest in economics, anthropology or fisheries science are especially encouraged to apply. Students will assist UAA faculty in fieldwork and will prepare reports describing subsistence harvest patterns in their respective communities. This is a paid student assistant position.

Application information must be submitted by March 28, 2008. Contact Suzanne Sharp for an application packet at (907) 786-5403 or ansss@uaa.alaska.edu.
