Traffic Poor lighting, traffic safety are top concerns among Anchorage residents

When asked about public safety in their neighborhoods, Anchorage residents cited concerns about poor lighting and traffic safety more often than they expressed a fear of crime, according to survey results recently released by the Justice Center at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Overall, residents throughout the Municipality of Anchorage liked their neighborhoods, expressing a strong sense of community. Problems with crime, physical disorder and social disorder were reported by less than one quarter of the 1,772 respondents to the 2007 survey. Racism, however, was a slightly greater concern, with 30 percent of respondents indicating they had experienced racism, primarily while shopping or at work.
