2008 Freshman Convocation and Campus Kick-Off

It's time to celebrate the start of a new academic year! There are many events happening on campus on Saturday, August 23 to welcome faculty, new and returning students, parents, staff and friends to campus.

The 4th annual Freshman Convocation will start the day's festivities at 3:30 p.m. in the Wendy Williamson Auditorium. This year's keynote speaker is world-renowned astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson. Tyson is the director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. He has written seven popular books, including Death by Black Hole, which was a New York Times bestseller. Dr. Tyson also stars in the PBS series Nova Science Now.

Key to the event's success is the attendance of faculty members to welcome our new, first-year students and their families to the University community. Faculty are invited to arrive at 2:30 p.m. at the Lucy Cuddy Hall for a reception with Chancellor Fran Ulmer and Provost Mike Driscoll.

Immediately following the Freshman Convocation ceremony, please join us for a Dessert Social in the Lucy Cuddy Hall for a chance to talk with first-year students as well as some of their parents at the Parent Reception. Click here for more information about Freshman Convocation.

Kick-Off The day's festivities continue at 5 p.m. with the 2008 Campus Kick-Off at UAA's Cuddy quad. Listen to live music by The Elevaters, eat great food (free to students taking six credits or more!), and peruse over 80 UAA and community booths. Other entertainment includes the Buttsketcher, Twisted Balloons, Crow Creek Pipes and Drums and more. Students have the opportunity to win some amazing prizes, including Alaska Airlines tickets, a laptop, gift certificates, portable hard drive and much more. Later in the evening, there is a Comedy Show featuring Joel McHale of E!'s "The Soup," and a Seawolf Volleyball Alumni Scrimmage. Click here for more information about Campus Kick-Off.

There's a lot happening, so please come out and join the UAA community for these exciting events!
