A Ford Foundation grant on Difficult Dialogues recently allowed UAA and APU faculty to develop a handbook on best practices for handling controversial topics in the classroom: Start Talking: A Handbook for Engaging Difficult Dialogues in Higher Education. This handbook addresses themes of academic freedom; classroom safety; rhetoric and debate; race, class and culture; science and religion; and business, politics and social justice.

Please join the UAA/APU Difficult Dialogues Project for a workshop that introduces a few of the proven techniques for productive classroom (and individual) discussions on tough topics ranging from stem cell research to evolution to gay marriage to racism. Specifically, this workshop will examine topics of gender and class as a framework to examine ways to respond to difficult topics and provide ways to encourage dialogue on topics people may want to avoid.

This workshop is co-sponsored with the UAA/APU Ford Foundation Difficult Dialogues project. Contact afjmm2@uaa.alaska.edu or tstewart@alaskapacific.edu for additional information.
