Thanksgiving Proclamation

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Thanksgiving proclamations have been issued annually since 1863 when Abraham Lincoln asked Americans to express thanks for the nation's blessings on the last Thursday in November. Lincoln issued his Thanksgiving proclamation just weeks before his famous Gettysburg Address. Washington had issued a Thanksgiving proclamation in 1782 after the colonials' success in the battles of Saratoga, and again in 1789. Only a few other Presidents issued proclamations prior to Lincoln's. In 1941 Congress set the date of Thanksgiving as the fourth Thursday in November (brought to you by The Forty-Ninth State Fellows of the University Honors College).

UAA will be closed Thursday, Nov. 27 and Friday, Nov. 28. We wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving Day.
