Civic Calendar: Remembering Frederick Douglass

by Kathleen McCoy  |

The Forty-Ninth State Fellows Program of the UAA Honors College calls the attention of the University community to the anniversary of the death of Frederick Douglass, former slave, abolitionist and spokesman for American freedom on February 20.

Born in Maryland, probably sometime in February 1818, Douglass escaped to Massachusetts in 1838 where he became an outspoken advocate for the abolition of slavery. Living much of his life in Washington, D.C., his fame as an orator and writer spread widely. He conferred with President Lincoln on slavery and the treatment of black soldiers. Several of his addresses are considered American classics. Douglass died in Washington in 1895.
