Icicle Seafoods donates $200,000 to support fishing industry research

Icicle Seafoods has made a second generous donation of $200,000 in support of programs and scholarships at several University of Alaska campuses. The donation includes $115,000 to the University of Alaska Anchorage Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) for the Icicle Fisheries Fund. The fisheries fund was established last year with a similar gift from Icicle Seafoods to strengthen ISER's capacity to engage in research and instruction regarding Alaska's fishing industry and seafood markets.

The primary use of the new Icicle grant to ISER will be to support active involvement of students in research about Alaska's fishing industry and seafood markets. ISER plans to offer regular academic-year and summer "fisheries economics research internships" for students to participate in ISER research related to fisheries. In particular, ISER will develop a program under which students track, analyze and report on market conditions for Alaska seafood. In this way, ISER hopes to help train a new generation of students who will have the interest and skills to study the issues that will confront the Alaska seafood industry in a rapidly changing global economy and potentially a rapidly changing ocean environment.
