The 2009 Cabin Fever Debates drew to a close Thursday, March 5, when four teams of UAA students battled for a $2,000 top prize and the chance to accompany the Seawolf Debate Team to the U.S. Universities Debating Championships. The Cabin Fever Debates, co-sponsored by Club Council and USUAA, is hosted by the Seawolf Debate Team as an intramural debating tournament for UAA students not on the competitive team.

The motion for the championship round was that "The U.S. should prosecute the Bush Administration for war crimes." In the end, Kelcie Ralph (senior, economics) and Faith Capras (sophomore, biology) convinced the panel of former CFD champions and distinguished alumni of the Seawolf Debate Team that the interests of the nation could be served only with a criminal trial.

The Seawolf Debate Team and the CFD champions will attend the U.S. Universities Debating Championships April 3-5 at the University of Vermont. This tournament will feature competition from over 100 debate teams from around the nation.

Later this month, the Seawolf Debate Team will host the Irish National Champion debate team in an exhibition round against some of UAA's top debaters. The Irish will debate the Alaskans on Wednesday, March 25 at 7 p.m. in SSB 118. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Steve Johnson at (907) 786-4391.
