Dear Community,

The NSF-sponsored Alaska EPSCoR Social Ecological Systems meeting that we're hosting in Anchorage this year is going to have a twist to it: Immersion Activities. We'll take participants out into the field around Anchorage to observe and explore a social-ecological system first-hand. There are three sites: an urban one (Westchester Lagoon), a rural one (head of Eagle River Valley) and an "industrial" one (Lower Ship Creek).

We have Site Hosts who will interpret the science of the place, but we need some highly skilled volunteers to accompany the groups and help with the following:

  • Knowledge (e.g., ecology, history, mythology, general pop culture, any of the above)
  • Crowd control: ensure participants don't wander, that they load and unload the buses, etc.
  • Safety and comfort: help us ensure that the participants are comfortable and safe (e.g., "No, you cannot hug the moose.")
  • Answer questions about Alaska, Anchorage and living in the north.
  • FUN!!!

The date is Tuesday, May 12 and we will need volunteers to be available for approximately 7-8 hours from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. We will remunerate volunteers with a small gift, free food and eternal gratitude.

If you are interested, please contact Melia Knecht of the EPSCoR Field Crew as soon as possible at anmmk@uaa.alaska.edu or (907) 786-7765.
