UAA mourns the death of Lewis Haines

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Lewis Haines, one of the most important figures in the foundation and growth of UAA, has passed away.

Dr. Lewis Haines was appointed provost of what was then the Southcentral Region of the University of Alaska in 1969. A key player in the merger of the community colleges into the University of Alaska Anchorage, Dr. Haines became the first provost of the new University.

During his tenure in this position he started or completed the five original buildings of the west campus: the Professional Studies Building (PSB), the Wendy Williamson Auditorium, the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, the Student Union, the Science Building, the Social Sciences Building (SSB) and the original Consortium Library.

Dr. Haines also served as UAA's athletic director. In 2008, in honor of Lewis Haines's contributions to the University, UAA named Room 307 in the UAA/APU Consortium Library the "Lewis E. Haines Meeting Room."

The loss of Dr. Haines will be felt deeply at UAA and in the community.
