Annual evacuation drills set for September 2011

by Kathleen McCoy  |

The University will again be conducting annual evacuation drills in all academic buildings the week of Sept. 21. All building occupants must exit the facility when the horns sound, and stay at least 50 feet from the building.

This year we are adding an important component to the drills, to ensure accountability that everyone got out safely. Those who work in the building daily should check their Building Emergency Plan (available from the building manager) to determine where the Emergency Assembly Area (EAA) is, and then plan to take a head count at that site.

Instructors should take a head count of their students as they leave the classroom or lab, and count them again when they report to the assembly area. Instructors who teach in multiple buildings may self-designate the class's assembly point. Students are strongly encouraged to report to the EAA, even if they intend to then leave for their next class or activity.

Please notify a uniformed official if you believe someone from your office or class group has not evacuated. As always, those in wheelchairs should seek refuge in the stairwell landing of the floor they're on, and ask someone reliable to notify officials of their location. For more information, contact the Office of Emergency Preparedness at (907) 786-1149.
