Fall 2009: Toll-free inter-campus telephone service begins

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Toll-free calling will be widely available between the Anchorage, MatSu, Homer and Valdez campuses on today, Sept. 14. Toll-free calling will be available at the Soldotna and Kodiak campuses by the end of September. This new feature will permit inter-campus calling between all UAA campuses without callers incurring long distance charges.

Toll-free calls may be made from any campus telephone. Calls are made the same way as local phone calls. For example, if a caller on the Anchorage campus wished to call the main number on the Prince William Sound campus s/he would:

Pick up phone (you'll hear campus dial tone)
Press 8
Dial the 7-digit number 834-1600

This process may be used to dial any valid campus phone number from another UAA campus. Some may notice that when you Press 8 that you no longer hear a local dial tone. This change is intentional. It does not, however, affect calling.

This feature is brought to UAA courtesy of the recently completed Voice-over-IP system deployment at UAA's community campuses. Later this fall, we will be installing a gateway between UAA's campuses and the Fairbanks campus that will extend toll-free calling to that campus plus the University of Alaska statewide office building.

Toll-free (also called toll bypass) calling service will save departments significantly in long distance charges. Cost savings will be directly available to departments for re-allocation to important academic and administrative uses.

Please contact the IT Call Center at (907) 786-4646 or (877) 633-3888 should you have questions about this service or how to use it.
