Students invited to enroll in 'action research' for spring semester

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Applications are currently being accepted for HNRS 209, Participatory Action Research in the spring 2010 semester. The course will be offered Mondays and Wednesdays 4-5:15 p.m. You do not need to be an Honors College student to take this course.

Action research is about investigating a community issue and proposing actions for positive change. In HNRS 209, we will research student success at UAA. Our research question for the spring semester and focus for positive change is "what do first year students at UAA need to know about academic advisement, enrollment policies and opportunities for engagement at UAA and how is this information best communicated to them?" Students in this course will design and utilize varied data collection methods (surveys, interviews, focus groups, etc.) to ask their campus peers this question. Students will prepare a final report with the results and the recommendations.

Students accepted into the course will receive a 3-credit tuition waiver to be applied to the course. The course is elective credit, but students are encouraged to check with their academic advisor to determine if a waiver could be requested to use the course as a social sciences GER.

It is a great project to list on your resume and it is a great opportunity to be part of creating a positive experience for all students at UAA.

Please visit the Honors College Web site for more details, including directions for applying for the course. If you have questions, please contact Dr. Diane Erickson at dianeerickson@uaa.alaska.edu.
