Fall 2009: ASL teacher Suellen J. Bahleda offers talk on the richness of sign language

English often uses the same word to represent different ideas. Suellen Bahleda will captivate with her enthusiasm on the topic of multiple meanings in American Sign Language. Her recently published book, Multiple Meanings in American Sign Language, is the foundation for this workshop. Through fun and games Sue will provide an overview and applied practice in creating appropriate English-to-ASL linguistic translations. The overview on Friday and the exercises on Saturday will incorporate analysis of meaning and functions within context to create accurate and efficient translations. This training will be conducted in English and is suitable for beginning interpreters and ASL students, though all levels are welcome.

Bahleda has taught ASL interpreting for 20 years and has served as coordinator of interpreting services for UAA and as director of the ASL program in the Dept. of Languages at UAA. She is the author of Fingerspelling the Real World and co-author of Fingerspelling in American Sign Language, and other books.

Admission for UAA students, AU students and East High School students is $35. ADRID members will pay $70, and non-members will pay $95. Students must have their valid student ID with them. Participants can register and pay at the door.
