CAFE offers the following classes this week and next:

Teaching the Books of the Year
Today, Oct. 9, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
UAA/APU Consortium Library, Room 302

Join your colleagues for a discussion of ways you can incorporate the UAA/APU Books of the Year into your courses during 2009-10. The theme for this year's Books is "Responding to Climate Change in Alaska," a very rich and topical subject that can be explored in a variety of ways throughout the curriculum. A faculty committee selected two books. The Whale and the Supercomputer by Charles Wohlforth, discusses the scientific method, Alaska Native ways of knowing and the impact of climate change on the whaling crews of Barrow.

Shopping for Porcupine by Seth Kantner is a series of autobiographical essays that show the ways humans can live off the land in the Far North, and the changes, both physical and social, wrought by climate change.

Both books are available at the UAA and APU Bookstores at a 20 percent discount.

Campus events related to these books are planned for the year, and many faculty are using all or part of the books in their courses. Please join us as we share ideas for how to begin discussing these important books and issues on campus this year!

Facilitator: Don Rearden -- Assistant Professor, College Preparatory and Developmental Studies.

UAA's Research Vision Forum
Today, Oct. 9, 8:30-9:30 a.m.
UAA/APU Consortium Library, Room 307

Please join us for an update on the status of UAA's efforts to build research infrastructure; competitively fund research grants; increase scholarly presentations and peer reviewed publications; and develop the graduate school.

During this session, we will revisit the four key areas outlined in the research section of UAA's Strategic Plan 2017 and address related issues, including:

  • building statewide research with support from NSF and NIH;
  • the support of organized research through research institutes and centers;
  • the role of interdisciplinary and individual research; and
  • training the next generation of researchers.

This session is sponsored by the Office of Research and Graduate Studies. Register here.

Thesis Formatting Workshop for Faculty
Wednesday, Oct. 14, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
UAA/APU Consortium Library, Room 302

This session is resented by CAFE, UAA Graduate School and UAF Graduate School. Faculty advisors are an important part of a graduate student's resources in writing their thesis or dissertation, not only with the content and academic rigor of the research of the thesis, but also in formatting the final product.

Are you familiar with the UAA Thesis Format Handbook? Did you know that as Chair of the Thesis Committee that you are responsible for the approval of thesis content, English usage, readability and thesis format?
