'Freakonomics' author Stephen J. Dubner speaks on campus on Jan. 27

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Wednesday, Jan. 27, 4:15-6 p.m.
Rasmuson Hall, Room 117

Through forceful storytelling and wry insight, Stephen J. Dubner shows how economics is, at root, the study of incentives -- that is, how people get what they want, or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing. His books, Freakonomics and Superfreakonomics show that the modern world, despite a great deal of complexity and downright deceit, is not impenetrable, is not unknowable, and -- if the right questions are asked -- is even more intriguing than we think. All it takes is a new way of looking.

This event is free and is sponsored by the UAA Economics Club, the UAA College of Business and Public Policy, AEDC and the UAA Campus Bookstore. In addition to this campus eventm Dubner will also speak at the 2010 Annual Forecast Luncheon, New Solutions for a New Economy from noon to 1:30 p.m. For ticket information to that event, visit www.AEDC.com. From 1:30-3 p.m., Dubner will sign books at the Dena'ina Civic and Convention Cente.

There also will be a book signing from 5:15-6 p.m. in UAA Rasmuson Hall Lobby after Dubner speaks at UAA. Everyone is encouraged to help us welcome Stephen J. Dubner to UAA.
