Killam Fellowships: apply before Jan. 31 to study in Canada

by Kathleen McCoy  |

The Killam Fellowships Program provides an opportunity for exceptional undergraduate students from universities in the United States to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in Canada. Students may participate in the program either as a direct exchange student (registering at their home university, paying their home fees and attend the host university as an exchange visitor) or as a self-placed visiting student (registering at the host university and paying host tuition fees). Applicants interested in the direct exchange program must be registered at one of the participating American universities and be planning to visit one of the participating Canadian universities, or vice versa.

The Killam Fellowships Program provides a cash award of $10,000 U.S. ($5,000 U.S. per semester). Further, the Foundation provides all Killam Fellows with an allowance of $500 (U.S.) to offset health insurance costs. In addition, all Fellows are eligible to apply for a mobility grant in an amount not to exceed $800. The idea of the mobility initiative is to allow students to undertake an educational field trip, providing the Fellows with the opportunity to gain a fuller understanding of the culture in Canada. In exceptional cases, and on a strictly competitive basis, the Foundation may be prepared to offer a modest high-cost allowance. This allowance is available only to those students participating in the direct exchange program.

Approximately forty scholarships will be available for 2010-11.

All UAA students who wish to study in another country need to coordinate their programs through UAA's Office of International Affairs to protect their admission status at UAA, receive resident credit for their courses, and use qualifying financial aid.  Students can contact the International Affairs Coordinator, Leslie Tuovinen, at 786-4135 or anlat@uaa.alaska.edu.
