UAA nursing students prepare Bhutanese refugees for first Alaska winter

by Kathleen McCoy  |

UAA Nursing students tackle a special project their senior year. For eight students in Fall 2009, it meant meeting newly arrived Bhutanese and Sudanese refugees and determining their health needs. They learned the refugees were fearful of an Alaska winter. The students set about teaching them how to fight flu and dress in layers for warmth. Watch their efforts unfold as they go to the Refugee Assistance and Immigration Service "Welcome Center" to share health tips through skits, games and a winter clothing drive.
