Long-time UAA professor John Strohmeyer passed away

by Kathleen McCoy  |

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of John Strohmeyer, long-time UAA professor, writer-in-residence and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist.

We were privileged to have John Strohmeyer first teach at UAA as an Atwood Professor in the Journalism and Public Communications Department. After his term as Atwood Professor, he remained at UAA as our first writer-in-residence and continued to be a strong supporter of the University, including playing an integral role in the development of the Consortium Library's permanent exhibit on the Anchorage Times.

Earlier this year we notified John that he would receive an honorary degree from UAA at the 2010 Commencement ceremony this May. He expressed his gratitude for being awarded the Doctor of Letters (Litt.D.), a recognition of his professional achievements and his contributions to UAA and Alaska.  This is his second honorary degree. He received the first in 1983 from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.

John received a Pulitzer Prize, the field of journalism's highest honor, in 1972 for his editorial campaign to reduce racial tensions in Bethlehem, PA.

Our deepest sympathy goes to his wife, former long time UAA professor and chair of Journalism and Public Communications, Sylvia Broady, John's children, grandchildren and those who were closest to him.

Memorial services are pending.
