Student Leaders Across The State Spent Spring Break Advocating Scholarship Legislation

UAA student leaders from the UAA Juneau Advocacy Team progressed their advocacy efforts last week, March 9-12 on their second attempt visiting Juneau. They spoke directly with Alaska legislators urging them to support the Governor's Comprehensive Scholarship Plan. Ten students from University of Alaska Anchorage and five students from University of Alaska Fairbanks attended to encourage law makers to fully fund and pass the scholarship legislation immediately.

The Advocacy Team met over 51 legislators to discuss the proposed scholarship legislation.  The majority of legislators expressed support for the idea; however, some said the cost could potentially deter support.  The Advocacy Team continued to encourage reluctant legislators by advocating the positive message that the scholarship is not a cost, but an investment in Alaska's future.  The Advocacy Team also stressed that Alaska's economy will grow through an increased workforce and the creation of more opportunities for Alaskans to attend college.

USUAA Government Relations Director Nick Moe said, "The Juneau Advocacy Team represented UAA students very well while in Juneau. Legislators heard the message loud and clear: pass scholarship now and make college more affordable for young Alaskans."

The Advocacy Team's efforts helped push the Governor's Scholarship Bill through the House Education Committee.  The scholarship legislation is scheduled to be heard Monday, March 22 in the House Finance Committee.
