Carolyn Hanthorne to lead UPD Auxiliary Emergency Team

by Kathleen McCoy  |

The UPD Auxiliary Emergency Team has elected Carolyn Hanthorne as its newest leader, for a two-year term. At its monthly meeting on Oct. 21, the members heard from nominees interested in the position, and elected Carolyn by secret ballot. Leaders of the team work with the police liaison throughout the academic year to facilitate meetings, training and participation in special events.

The Auxiliary Team is a chapter of the national Volunteers In Police Service. Comprised of full-time faculty and staff at the Anchorage campus, the team received specialized training in crowd and traffic control, evacuating buildings, scene preservation, evidence collection, fire fighting and other topics that would help them assist the UAA Police Department during a large crisis.

The team is on-call during regular business hours, and is dispatched through UPD using digital pagers. They have gear bags and portable radios provided through funding from various University departments and a grant from State Farm Insurance.

Employees interested in learning how they can join should contact Lt. Ron Swartz at anrcs@uaa.alaska.edu.

Congratulations to Carolyn!
