Office of Sustainability to calculate UAA's electricity, natural gas and fleet-fuel usage; seeking volunteers

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Engineering student Lei Yao, working through the Office of Sustainability, will use the Clean Air Cool Planet model to calculate UAA's emissions of electricity, natural gas and fleet-fuel usage. He will also present periodic seminars to students (undergraduate or graduate) that will allow them to follow along and learn how to make these same calculations using this model. Students won't earn credit, but will find this a valuable skill to put on their resumes. More and more businesses are calculating their emissions, and considering that EPA now requires businesses emitting more than 45,000 metric tonnes per year to report, it will be a good skill for students to know as they move into the work world.

Lei Yao is looking for 20 volunteers. Reach him at either (907) 786-1965 or (907) 310-8172, or by e-mail at lyao@uaa.alaska.edu.
