TONIGHT: Filipino American History Month presents Kevin Nadal Oct. 21

Dr. Kevin Nadal is a professor, psychologist, performer, activist and author. He received his doctorate in counseling psychology from Columbia University and recently published a book entitled, "Filipino American Psychology." He will present excerpts from his one man show, "Pinoy." This event is free and open to the public. Food will be available. Join us for an evening of learning and laughter. Did you know that Filipinos were in the continental United States as early as 1587? Or that the first permanent settlement of Filipinos was documented in the bayous of Louisiana in 1763? Filipinos have been in Alaska since 1788 and yet what is known about this community?

The Alaskero Partnership Organization and the University of Alaska Anchorage are celebrating Filipino American History Month every Thursday from 6-8 p.m. during the month of October at UAA. Events will have food, are free and are open to the public.

The U.S. Congress, the State of Alaska and the Municipality of Anchorage have all issued proclamations declaring October 2010 as Filipino American History Month. The Filipino American National Historical Society established this celebration in 1988. Filipinos are the second largest Asian American/Pacific Islander population in the United States. More than 12,000 Filipinos live in Alaska.
