Student Spotlight: Hillary Orley, Psychology and Resident Advisor

Going to UAA was an easy choice for UAA psychology major Hillary Orley. With a father who is currently a professor of accounting, she receives a tuition waiver each semester. "That's definitely one of the perks of having a professor for a dad," she says smiling.

Hillary is  part of a student volunteer project that will be going to Costa Rica for two weeks in the summer of 2011. "It could be more humanitarian-related, like building homes or teaching English, or it could be more toward nature volunteer work, like planting trees and helping animal life."

Hillary grew up in Anchorage and has always been actively involved in her community. Her choice to become a Resident Advisor (RA) at UAA seemed like a natural step for her. "I love to work with freshman. They are like a breath of fresh air and are excited to embark on their college career. I have the opportunity to help shape their freshman year," she says.

As an RA, Hillary is assigned to live in one of UAA's residential communities where she serves as a role model and mentor to residents, hosts and plans social and educational activities. She deals with violations of the Student Code of Conduct and University regulations, and monitors the safety of residents.

"It's really challenging at times, but I love being a resource for students and teaching them what I know," Hillary says. She also enjoys meeting all of the different people that come to UAA. "I've met people from all over the place like Hawaii, Texas, and of course Alaska. It's neat to see how they bring different aspects of daily life to the campus."

When Hillary isn't focusing on being an RA, she is a full-time student working toward a bachelor degree in psychology. "I enjoy learning why people act the way they act. I chose to go with psychology, because the possibilities for a career are endless," she says.  Hillary is thinking about becoming a therapist, but admits that her decision could change in the future as she continues with her education.

In her junior year at UAA, Hillary has also taken on a minor in German, as well as a minor in communications. Communication and Discourse Studies Associate Professor Shawnalee Whitney inspired Hillary to add a minor in Communication. "I just happened to take her introduction to communications class, and I was completely fascinated. Her teaching style is informative and intriguing. It's really beneficial information that will not only help me in my career, but also daily interaction."

Hillary is looking forward to the summer when she will take her volunteer trip to Costa Rica. "I couldn't be more excited about this summer," she says. "I love to travel, but I do plan on staying in Alaska. It's beautiful and it's home."
