More than 800 college and universities across the U.S. are using learning communities; many focus on first-year students, since this is the most critical time to ensure student retention. There's considerable evidence that learning communities are effective in terms of student retention, motivation and achievement.

Join us for a brown bag discussion with Dr. Barbara Leigh Smith, co-founder of the Learning Communities movement in higher education and author/co-author of seminal publications on the topic, including "Learning Communities: Reforming Undergraduate Education." Smith is currently senior scholar and co-director of the Native Cases Initiative and Enduring Legacies Reservation-Based Project at The Evergreen State College.
